Musher Info - General

The goal of the Haliburton Highlands Dogsled Derby and the village of Haliburton is to host a world class event offering mushers the challenging landscape of the Highlands for the race trail combined with the friendliness of our small town community. With a high end purse for Open & Purebred teams competing for IFSS and/or ISDRA points, Haliburton Village looks forward to welcoming dog drivers from across Canada & the USA.

2009 is the race's 8th year and we are offering a $10,000 CAN purse, with plans to increase it again next year. We are ISDRA sanctioned. Each race is a grouped category with both Open & Purebred teams competing, and racers going out on a 2 minute interval. On the 1st day, the Opens draw bib numbers Friday night (attendance is mandatory to draw a bib number) and go out in that order, the Siberian's also draw bib numbers and start going out 2 minutes after the last open team has left. Sunday, racers go out based on Saturday times.

Trail - Dogsleds

photo - 4 dog Open The Haliburton Highlands is a beautiful rugged part of the Canadian Shield, located on the Southwest corner of Algonquin Park, a land of lakes and wilderness. The race course is set up to showcase the landscape we live in. We are excited to be having the races this year on the grounds of the Delta Pinestone Resort, with the exception of the 8 dog race which leaves the property for 2 miles. The layout allows for a complete loop trail so no head on passing is necessary. The race starts in front of the resort on a straight, level trail along a pond. The trail winds it's way through the Delta property with a combination of open straight terrain as well as some hills and some wooded area runs. The extra 2 miles used for the 8 dog race, will follow a beautiful wide wooded trail loop. The majority of the trail used for the race will be a virgin trail, laid out, packed and groomed solely for the dogsled races. Each race offers almost to the decimal a 4 and 6 mile course.

Trail - Skijoring

The Skijoring race will be held at the Delta Pinestone Resort on their golf course both Saturday & Sunday. The trail is 4 miles and offers a combination of fairway runs and wooded trails it will be the same course run by the 4 dog teams. The trial true to our landscape offers some gentle hills and is a complete loop, with no head on passing.

Veterinary Staff

Two Veterinarians will be on site for the weekend of the race to assist with any problems. Dr. Laurie Brown of Haliburton Vet Clinic and Dr. Mark Gemmill of Cornell Animal Hospital in Guelph. In case of emergency Dr. Brown's clinic is less than 5 minutes from the race start/finish.

Race

We follow ISRDRA race rules, with a no whip policy.
